Expert level freerider
Alex's rating of this snowboard:
Considering his boarders profile:
"Easy float, let me hike, surf and play any terrain. I don't like a powder board to be too flexible, because I want to lay some trenches on the groomers too. When the snow starts falling in the evening, I get happily nervous for the next day."
My favourite freeride snowboards:
1. Jones Carbon Flagship
2. Nitro Mountain
3. Jones Flagship
To all my reviews
5 star plus plus
The Jones Carbon Flagship (tested at 164 cm) is so much more than just an awesome freerider. If I could give more than 5 stars, the Carbon Flagship would get it. Why? Because this freeride snowboard has so much more to offer than riding powder. The Jones Carbon Flagship simply laughs at crud and hard packed snow. And when you take it on a carving trip down slick groomers, it answers and holds edge like the stiffest snowboards for softboots. It is not a cheap board, but if you can afford it, the Carbon Flagship pays you back in adrenaline. This is a quiver! It turns so easy and quick, I couldn't hardly imagine. Jones Carbon Flagship is an unbelievable 5 star board for me.
Pow and piste, big lines
Jones Carbon Flagship is for the big line lovers, especially on piste. But then you'll be surprised how easy it is to maneuver in powder snow. For such a stiff snowboard, the Carbon Flagship is not that hard work as you might expect to get around short. This makes this freeride board so versatile off-piste, unbelievable good. The stiffness keeps it very stable as well. Just take into consideration that the stiffnes also makes the Carbon Flagship only little forgiving. Therefor I would say you need good skills to tame it, especially on piste. It is superresponsive and direct to steer and if you know what you are doing this is a fantastic bonus on top of having a superb freerider on your feet. If the Carbon version is just too much for you, you can always go for the Jones Flagship without the carbon. Also a 5 star freeride board to me and a little more forgiving.
Jones about the Carbon Flagship
"The Carbon Flagship is a seriously stiff, competition-ready freeride gun that crushes terrain unlike any board you’ve ever experienced. It’s built to be chatter free at any speed and stable enough to stomp airs bigger than your legs can handle. For 2017 we’ve both re-shaped and re-designed the Carbon Flagship using 2X Textreme Carbon instead of a traditional topsheet and a Spoon 3.0 Nose and Tail. The new version is every bit as powerful and responsive, but even faster edge-to-edge thanks to the Spoon tips and a new progressive sidecut profile that eliminates friction at the contact points.
The Carbon Series
The Carbon Series are the most high performance boards we produce. They are designed to meet the demands of ground breaking riders who push the limits of what’s possible on a snowboard. If you ride confidently and chase serious new chal- lenges on your snowboard, these are the boards you’re looking for.
A hybrid rocker/camber flex pattern defined by more tip rocker then tail rocker and camber between the bindings. The rockered tip floats the board’s nose and improves maneuverability while the camber underfoot provides edge hold and response. A slightly rockered tail maintains the power and stability of a traditional board but helps keep the tail catch-free initiating turns and landing switch. My experience is that most falls in freeriding start from the nose of the board – you either go over the bars in powder, the nose gets caught under a weird crust and tosses you, or you hit a hard tranny at the contact point of the tip and get bucked. Directional Rocker eliminates most of these falls.", says Jones.
Nitro Quiver MTN: fantastic performance in freeride country, less stiff.
Rossignol XV Magtek: big mountain board that is fantastic for experts, carving limits are lower.
Jones Flagship: so good already, slightly easier freerider than the Carbon version.
