2017 - 2018 Two Ski Quiver Review

Reviewer Craig

"Powder bump runs with numerous face shots, creamy untracked pow turns, and even huge carve turns on empty groomed runs at the beginning of the day are my favorite. I am not a high speed skier."

Logo Yellow Gentian2017 - 2018 Two Ski QuiverReviewer Craig

     by Craig in Vail, Colorado

Why a two-ski-quiver?

For many years, I have been using skis in the approximate 100cm underfoot width because of their stated "do it all" one ski quiver capability for my local Colorado conditions. However, living here in Vail, and having the opportunity to review the top available skis on the market for the current year, and next, I realized the pleasure of riding today's versatile wide powder skis for our frequent soft days, and the sacrifice I had been enduring, only having a one-ski-quiver.
The approximate 100cm width skis generally do not have the edge hold, or carving capability of some of the top skis in the near 90mm underfoot width, that can hold on those skied off areas, make your carving dreams reality, and easily overlap the performance limits of your pow ski. The 100mm width skis do not provide the float of a 115mm or wider powder ski, that significantly reduces required effort, increases maneuverability, and stability in deep powder, or thick spring corn snow conditions. Not to mention, that the top wide pow skis can also be great carving skis in softer conditions, and rip soft or powder bumps. Your pleasure, quality of your skiing, and endurance, can all be elevated in powder conditions, when you match a top pow ski to your profile. My article "2017-2018 Powder Ski Review" on this web site, evaluates some of this year, and next years skis, and their individual attributes. Below I list a few examples of top rated skis, that can make your Ideal Two Ski Quiver, for all of the conditions we are exposed to here in the western US, and many other locations. Check out the individual reviews for more detail on these skis. Matching available sizing to your profile, should influence your ski decision. Based on my profile, the 187cm Liberty Genome, and the 180cm Rossignol E 88HD are a "ideal" Two Ski Quiver, and delete any need for ski widths in between these two versatile skis. To summarize, yes a 100mm underfoot ski can make a great one ski quiver, but they make sacrifices on both ends of the snow spectrum, and you miss out on supersizing your skiing experience! The Genome and the 88HD also have similar characteristics, and on snow feel, even though they are very different in width. This similarity makes a easy transition when switching between the two skis.

Powder Skis

Liberty Genome

Top pick for wide pow skis, and best suited for the advanced-expert skier. Stable in heavy or cut up pow conditions with very good damping, and torsional stability. Quick turn initiation with excellent soft-pow bump performance. Very large sweet spot. More traditional shape but superb float. Even soft flex. Excellent edge and carving ability for a wide pow ski. Heavier weight at 2500g flat for 187cm tested length. Wide width at 141mm. 23m turn radius. Ideal length for my profile.

Armada Tracer 118

New for the 2018 season. Good blend of light weight and moderate damping, weight 2150g @188cm flat. Short turn radius @ 20m, quick turn initiation, very good in soft bumps. Great carver with above average edge hold for this width. Great float with 5 point sidecut and soft flex, very good stability in cut up conditions. Ideal length for my profile.

DPS Lotus 124 Foundation

Good blend of light weight and moderate damping in this tested 184cm length. Great carver with above average edge hold for this width. More traditional shape. Very short turn radius @17m. Even soft flex. Quick turn initiation and very good in soft bumps. Average float for this width with very good stability in cut up conditions. A great choice for the in-resort skier. Length seemed adequate, may be able to go slightly longer based on my profile .

Blizzard Rustler 11

New for the 2018 season. 188cm length with 23m turn radius, and moderate weight for this 114mm width, with partial titanal laminate. Flex is medium-soft with stiffer mid section. Excellent stability at speed, well suited to the higher speed skier. Similar feel to the narrower Bonafide with very good damping. Good in soft bumps. Average float and edge, slow to release from high edge angles, that could probably be corrected with tuning. Length appropriate for my profile, perhaps 186cm would be ideal.

Line Supernatural 115

2016-17 model. Discontinued for the 2018 season, look for sale pricing. Heavy weight in tested 186cm length. 23m turn radius and 2470g flat based on 179cm length. Excellent damping, and great in soft bumps with its titanal laminate. Medium flex with stiffer tail. Average float with good edge for this 115mm width. Ok stability at speed. Great choice for the pow bump skier. Correct length for my profile.

Rossignol Experience 88 HD

Stable, damp, even flex, quick turn initiation, excellent carver at all turn radius, excellent edge hold and engagement, better float in pow than many skis in the approximate 100mm underfoot width, excellent in soft-pow bumps, stiffer flex but forgiving with large sweet spot. Top pick and "benchmark" in this approximate 88mm width. Weight-2100g flat @180cm-17m turn radius. 180cm length Ideal for my profile.

Salomon 88 XDR Ti

New for the 2018 season. Stable, quick turning, excellent edge hold, excellent carver at all radius. Light weight. Very good in bumps. Large sweet spot. Slow to release from high edge angle, may be corrected with tuning. 186cm tested length with 18m turn radius. Weight 1620g flat at 179cm length. Perhaps a 184cm length would be ideal for my profile, but error towards longer length based on your profile and this width.

Kästle MX 89

Superb on piste with excellent damping and stability. Excellent edge hold. Stiff flex with stiffer tail. Superb carver. More challenging off piste and in bumps. Smaller sweet spot, with preferred weight forward to neutral position. Limited pow capabilities. Weight: 2081g flat @180cm. Turn radius 18m @180 cm. 180cm tested length ideal for my profile.
