Reviewer Heyman

"Edge grip and accelleration are crucial elements for a slalom ski. Edge grip to challenge you each time to turn sharper and go almost horizontal through the turn. Accellaration to shoot you into the next turn until your legs burn."

Extremely fast and agile slalom ski

The Elan SLX FIS Plate is a thoroughbred slalom race ski. It's all superlatives: extremely stiff, razor sharp edge grip, super tight turning, fast as lightning, horizontal carving, incredibly direct and the torsional stability of a concrete block. Everything an expert slalom skier might hope for. So at the end of a long run you feel 10cm shorter due to all the G-forces you had to endure. Surprisingly though the SLX FIS Plate is accessible for an advanced skier as well. This is due to Elan's Amphibio technique: a little rocker on the outside of the tip and tail and camber on the inside. That provides exceptional edge grip for supertight carving without limiting the ski to do only that. An old school slipping turn is possible as well, so you may relax a little bit once in a while.

Little rocket skis

Skiing on the Elan SLX FIS Plate feels like you have strapped a pair of rockets under your feet. That's what the acceleration of this ski is like. It's a real leg burner. But when the last drop of energy has left your legs, you just stand up straight, wiggle your tail a little and slip and slide to the bottom of the slope. Brilliant!

Elan about the SLX FIS Plate

"The Elan SLX FIS Plate was developed for the most demanding skiers who are looking to gain precious tenths of seconds in every turn. Not only FIS approved, this skis are 100 % approved by the racers themselves", says Elan. And 100% approved by me. What a ski!

Hi Heyman

You seem to really like this ski, anything more you could say, +/-?

Why don't you think it's as god as the Blizzard SRC Racing S, HEAD WX Rebels i.SL or the Salomon X-Race, is it lacking something or are all of them just really close to perfect so that's more down to a feeling...?

Hi Lars,

I do think the Elan SLX FIS Plate is a very good slalom ski. If you're into slalom skiing to race, you always should buy a FIS version because of the added rigidity. But if you like slalom skis just for the fun of it, like me, you don't need that extra rigid flex. It takes some of the playfulness away.

I like the Blizzard SRC so much, because it's extremely playful and it doesn't have any rocker in it. It's one long camber arc, which makes the rebound even more extreme. And that makes it a killer also. One small mistake and you get punished severely. That feeling of skiing on the edge, flirting with disaster, I love it. The Elan SLX does not have that because of the amphibio rocker.

Hi again

I've been riding the 2008/2009 SLX FIS, the 2011/2012 Atomic SL FIS and since I'm a big fellow on a mear 115 kg i think I need the rigidity or they will be to nervous when the speed picks up, my thoughts anyways. I've also tried the fischers SL FIS and the Nordica Dobbermann but my memories from my first SLX FIS are still strong and filled with fun.

My skiing abilities are okey but there are things to work on of course, and I like to test new skis every now and then.
This is me skiing my just sold Atomics: (for references regarding my skill level)
