Reviewer Craig

"Powder bump runs with numerous face shots, creamy untracked pow turns, and even huge carve turns on empty groomed runs at the beginning of the day are my favorite. I am not a high speed skier."

Light weight and impressive performance

Light weight skis are still trending popular for next season, as was demonstrated at the 2017-18 SIA ski demo at Copper Mountain, Colorado. The Armada Tracer was one of the lighter powder ski offerings I have reviewed. Companies have been trying to find a construction that blends light weight, yet retains stability and damping. Typically, light weight skis have lacked both of these attributes, and generally perform poorly in bumps, and variable conditions.
Armada has found an answer! Technical information was limited at the time of this review, on their available lengths, sidecut, and construction, but I did have a short talk with one of their engineer-designers. The Tracer has a softer tip and tail, with a medium flex mid-section, as he demonstrated with the pressure of his foot. They use a laminate labeled "Innegra", which he also referred to as "carbon crystal mesh", the same material used in the blades, on large wind turbines.

Groomers

This new construction carves beautifully at all turn radius, on groomers with consistent conditions.  It loves high edge angles, with its above average edge hold.  Turn initiation is excellent, and edge engagement is smooth. With moderate damping, soft flex, and a large sweet spot, it performed very good in softer cut up conditions.

Bumps

Light weight, flickable, stable, moderately damped, short 20 meter turn radius, with excellent turn initiation.  Yes, this ski works excellent in soft bumps!

Powder

If your looking for a light weight powder ski........Good stability, wide 5 point sidecut front section, medium-soft flex, 188 length, and 118 underfoot, this pow ski should be at the top of your list!

Armada about the Tracer 118

"Our ultimate big mountain performer. The Tracer 118 CHX takes the best of our elf shoe technology development in the nose and combines it with a slight amount of tail rocker to produce a surfy and weight-efficient, yet hard-charging ski", says Armada.

2017-2018 Powder Ski Review

Wider skis are better! Let's check it out.

by Craig

I have selected some of the wider offerings (approximate 115mm underfoot and above) that were available for 2016-17 season, as well, the new releases coming for 2017-18. See the individual ski reviews on the Yellow Gentian site for further details on each ski, and best internet pricing on...
