Reviewer Alex

"I like rocker for easy turning and float off-piste. Tip vibration doesn't bother me at all. Of course versatility is a condition for a quality all-mountain ski. It depends on snow conditions whether I prefer frontside skis."

Widest X-drive supplies versatility

The Salomon X-Drive 8.8 is the all-mountain frontside ski that is closest to a backside ski in the X-Drive series. In that way it is one of a kind as for powder there are better options and for carving too. The quality of the combination makes it interesting. The X-drive 8.8 is steady and stable on long turns, enough edge grip for skiing with power. In powder these all-mountain skis are definitely steadier and more confident than most frontside skis. Versatile stiff ski for advanced skiers who are not looking for playfulness and maneuverability.

Glossy topsheet

Probably looks nice and slick, a glossy topsheet, but when picking them up it is too slippery. You'll get used to it but it can't be too difficult to place some grip surface at the pick-up point. Back to performance of the 8.8 X-drive. Especially for those moving forward to see more terrain than piste, this is a perfect step up. Still power and speed for groomers while fresh snow is no problem as long as you are prepared to work a bit. More serious than playful, more speed than maneuverability.

Salomon about the X-Drive 8.8 FS

"The ultimate all-mountain ski for on-piste carving and backside charging.

Power and Precision
Reinforced Carbon Composite X-shaped frame improves power and edge grip for maximum precision.

Terrain absorption
All-Terrain Rocker provides the optimum balance of floatation, terrain absorption, and stability for all snow conditions and types of terrain.

Dampening material integrated into the rocker shape reduces vibrations at the tip for improved stability."
, according to Salomon. I agree it is on the line between frontside and backside, inevitably it gives in on frontside performance. With versatility to backside and comfort in return.
