Considering his skiers profile:
"All-mountain skis will be my choice when conditions vary from firm to 6" of fresh snow. Better edge hold and carving capabilities should be expected compared to my powder skis. They should be competent in crud and soft bumps."

A narrow Liberty Helix?
Liberty gave me the opportunity to test drive their "prototype" for next year, 87mm underfoot iteration of the Variant line. I have been told, that changes will be made to this prototype prior to its release for next season. These changes will include a stiffer tail, for more pop out of the turn, enhancing its on piste groomed performance. Liberty's ski designer also mentioned, that the thickness of the Titanal layer may also be increased to enhance torsional stability, and dampness (which I'm all about...and please make mine in a 182-184cm length). In its current configuration, this Variant 87 in a 186cm length, reminds me of the current model year Helix in a 187cm length that has no metal or carbon in its layup, even though the graphics tell you this is a Variant. Those skiers who enjoy a light weight, lightly damped ski like the, Rossignol Soul 7, or the Liberty Helix, will find a familiar feel with this prototype. If however, you prefer the feel of the current Variant 97mm that is heavier, well damped, softer forebody, with impressive torsional stability, that offers a smooth forgiving ride in bumps, and off piste conditions, the Variant 87 prototype may not satisfy your taste buds. (Please check out my reviews of the above skis, for further description, and my profile, to better understand how and where I ski, and ski characteristics I prefer) As with other light weight skis with similar characteristics, I would probably prefer a shorter length in this prototype, perhaps, a 182cm vs the 186cm I demoed, to enhance its performance and maneuverability in bumps. I will hold off on rating this ski, until Liberty has completed their final design for next season.
Liberty about the Variant 87
"THE VARIANT87 is an all-mountain performer with an adventurous streak. With a versatile 87mm waist, more aggressive multi-radius sidecut, titanal metalcore, and just enough Hammer Rocker to keep things smooth, the Variant87 has been making converts on the front side from east to west.", says Liberty.
Liberty Helix: similar carve and edge hold but more float then the Variant 87.
Rossignol Soul 7: similar carve. less edge hold, more float.
Blizzard Brahma: an all-mountain freeride cross-over ski that excels in crud.
