Advanced all-mountain skier
Alex's rating of this ski:
Considering his skiers profile:
Serious good ski
I am very enthusiastic about the Elan Amphibio 88 XTi all-mountain ski. The ski feels balanced at 176cm length with my height at 181cm. Stable at any speed, you can carve and focus on your turns. Turn initiation comes easy and quick and 88mm under the feet doesn't feel like a heavy burden at all on the 88 XTi. The width is a pro to me as when the groomers are soft or even with fresh snow on top, it pays off to get around any chop. Why 'only' 4 stars then? Well, I like all-mountain skis to perform different off-piste in powder snow, like the Salomon Q-90 for example. It is the trade-off between more edge hold on piste or comfort in powder.
Versatility and off-piste limit
The versatility of the Amphibio 88 XTi ski is on the piste as you can push it as far as you want and get that bit of comfort. Amphibio with left and right ski shortly explained in how it affects skiing: the rocker part of your ski on the outside provides the comfort when you initiate your turn and while switching. At the same time the good old camber inside gives it character, edge hold and rebound. It doesn't matter what the piste looks like, the Amphibio 88 XTi is a friend in all conditions there. Just when I took this all-mountain ski off-piste in decent powder, it lost the comfort. Still possible, just needs more work, the size of the 88 XTi is sufficient not to dive immediately, but I rather have more rocker on the tail. Conclusion: good all-mountain ski. Very stable and smooth on any groomer. Wide enough for soft snow and enough edge grip for wide turns.
Elan about the Amphibio 88 XTi Fusion
"Made with Amphibio 4D technology, this ski is equipped with Amphibio® profile, which assures greater edge grip and faster more direct turns. The convex front section of the ski provides a more precise turn entry, while the concave rear guarantees a dynamic exit from the turn. Dual Shaped Titanium increases torsional stability, reduces vibration by 30%, and brings down the weight of the ski. These skis have a new lifted binding with an improved toe ramp for faster carve initiation and enhanced performance and transmission of power. This ski also features RST Sidewalls, a Response Frame Woodcore, and Dual Shaped XTi.", says Elan. Amphibio works for me and I like the power and stability of this all-mountain ski.
