Logo Yellow GentianAll-mountain ski test reviews

All-mountain skis are a big range of skis from mainly all conditions on piste (frontside skis) to all-mountain skis with freeride qualities and comfortable behavior on piste. The frontside skis are in performance closer to pure piste skis and their main extra quality is to deal with chopped-up groomers with more comfort. Besides the occasional off-piste run next to the piste, these skis are better used only the prepared slopes.

The all-mountain backside skis are closer to the freeride department. They must be able to handle powder and any chopped-up terrain and usually give in on pure piste qualities as carving and stability at speed. And as there is a ski for everyone, everything in between is possible too, like twin tips, flat tails, rocker tails, flat skis etc..

"I ski at high speed, so stability is vital. As is powder output for I dart off-piste all the time. Versatility is all important for an all-mountain ski, with an emphasis on powder (backside) for me. But I still like them to be stiff, not flexible."

"I like my ski to be comfortable and handling bumps and loose snow without effort. I don't go off-piste more than on the side of groomers. A typical all conditions on the piste skier with comfort and style as priorities."

"Versatility is crucial. I want to cover the whole mountain on the same day. Stability and camber for carving on piste, rocker for float off-piste, agility and playfulness are key factors for my perfect all-mountain ski."

"I like rocker for easy turning and float off-piste. Tip vibration doesn't bother me at all. Of course versatility is a condition for a quality all-mountain ski. It depends on snow conditions whether I prefer frontside skis."

"A true all-mountain ski is as good off-piste as it is on-piste. Stiff enough to remain stable at top speed, flexible enough for comfort in poor circumstances. It is essential that the perfect all-mountain ski performs well in all conditions."

"All-mountain skis will be my choice when conditions vary from firm to 6" of fresh snow. Better edge hold and carving capabilities should be expected compared to my powder skis. They should be competent in crud and soft bumps."

"Versatility is what counts most in an all-mountain ski, a good performance in all kinds of snow. But since this category holds just about anything from 80 mm piste-oriented carving machines to 110 mm powder boards, the devil is in the details."

"My all-Mountain ski needs to get me through firm moguls with confidence, have excellent edge hold, and still perform in soft snow off-piste. Yeah, that's a lot to ask of a ski!"

Ratings are personal

The ski testers you see, have all tested piste skis. Their ski reviews and ratings reflect the kind of skier they are. In our opinion the big skibrands don't make bad skis. The challenge is to find the right match between ski and skier and that will stay at least partly subjective. By getting to know more about the tester, you should be able to get an idea what the ski can do for you. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask us via Google+, facebook or by e-mail info@yellowgentian.com. If you want to share your own reviews about piste skis, you can become a tester too! Fill in the test report form and we'll get in touch with you.
